ES.ONTWERP ♥
WERELDWIJVEN
13/10/11 – 28/10/11
exhibition, shop, discussion forum and production place all at the same time
Es.ontwerp and Wereldwijven will co-operate for a three week period of time
in Intermezzo’s monumental building, with the aim of realizing a small
collection of unique and usable products.
Simone Romanow is the woman behind the Rotterdam based interior design label
Es.ontwerp. Founded in 2005 this label comprises mainly interior products.
These products are solely produced in the Netherlands and brought out as
one-offs or limited editions.
Simone often works intuitively; one found object is enough to set the
creative process in motion. Technical mishaps during fabrication or issues
concerning usability and lifetime of her products she considers to be extra
challenging.
"Analysing how objects are put together and how they behave is what
interests me. It takes both technical knowledge and imagination to develop a
product. It also is very helpful when you, just like me, like tinkering;
messing around with materials to get the most out of an idea”.
Besides current products, like the Valve Candlesticks and the Sphere
Lamps XL, new products will be presented in Intermezzo. The "Ford Bench" for
instance; a sturdy metal bench seat made out of car parts, with matching
cushions. In addition visitors will have the opportunity to watch (part of
the) product development process of the LEDLamp: a lamp where LED-strips,
including transformer, are casted in transparent polyester.
WERELDWIJVEN are the craftswomen of the handworkLAB of Intermezzo, space for
design
in Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
These craftswomen are women with all kinds of different cultural backgrounds
and talents. They collectively work together in Intermezzo producing a
series of (interior)products under Wereldwijven’s
own label but also in commission of third parties; for instance
designers who are looking for a way to outsource part of their production
work.
The sturdy materials used by Simone Romanow, such as glasfiber
reinforced polyester and re-used materials from industry or junkyard, are
seemingly a big contrast to the textile materials used by Wereldwijven.
Nonetheless it looks like these opposites will meet each other in es.ontwerp
♥ wereldwijven.
Visitors are welcome to take a peek behind the scenes
of
product development; a process that usually remains mostly invisible.
